Gibson Christmas market in Frankfurt accepts Bitcoin payments
Where the Gibson Beach Club invited visitors to relax in summer, the area is now transformed into a festive winter market: until December 23, the Gibson Winter Market in the heart of Frankfurt’s banking district invites you to enjoy the pre-Christmas season.
Various operators offer Christmas and international specialties in a total of nine huts. The offer is complemented by two drinks bars from the Gibson Club and the Tyrolean alpine hut
Bitcoin at the mulled wine stand
Whether mulled wine, hot cider, burgers, tarte flambée, potato pancakes, soup or Kaiserschmarrn – numerous dishes and drinks can be paid for directly with Bitcoin.
The idea came from Pia Mai, co-organizer of the market:

“The topic of crypto is omnipresent, especially in Frankfurt as a financial center. So it made sense to bring the new form of digital payment to life at the Gibson Xmas.”
Support was provided by Jens Leinert from the Bitcoin payment agency Coincharge. After a brief introduction to the system seven of the nine huts were immediately ready to accept Bitcoin payments. Bitcoin terminals are being used, which were made available by the Blocktrainer team. made available by and have already proved themselves at events organised by the Bitcoin community have already proven themselves.
The participating huts can be recognized by the “We accept Bitcoin” sticker.
The payment process is very simple and easy for visitors to understand:
-
The retailer enters the euro amount at the terminal
-
A Bitcoin QR code is generated
-
The customer opens a Bitcoin wallet (e.g. Wallet of Satoshi) and scans the QR code to make the payment
The prerequisite is a previously set up wallet and a small amount of Bitcoin (“Satoshis”) on the smartphone.
Bitcoin in practice – outside the crypto community
For Leinert, the project is an important step towards making Bitcoin accessible to a wider public as a payment method:
“Paying for Bitcoin events has been working smoothly for a long time. Now we want to show how easy it is outside the community too.”
He also emphasizes that the majority of the more than ten million Bitcoin and crypto owners in Germany save their coins rather than spend them. Nevertheless, it is important to make the technology’s suitability for everyday use visible.
The special attention that the Christmas market receives confirms the interest in innovative forms of payment. Media such as the Journal Frankfurt (“Between banks and Bitcoin: Gibson Winter Market opens“) and the FAZ (“Bratwurst and Bitcoins: Christmas spirit in Frankfurt’s banking district“) have already reported in detail.
