In this article, we look at payment providers that offer Bitcoin payments for Shopify. Once the question of the store system has been clarified, store operators should ask themselves the question: “Which cryptocurrencies do you want to offer your customers?” Our recommendation is to definitely offer your customers Bitcoin payments via the blockchain and the Lightning Network. Bitcoin is the standard for payment processing with cryptocurrencies. Every cryptocurrency holder also owns Bitcoin and is therefore able to pay with Bitcoin in the Shopify Shop.
A Bitcoin payment over the Lightning network is an evolution of Bitcoin payment processing. Bitcoin payments can be made quickly and easily with Lightning. Lightning payments are also anonymous and inexpensive. If you want to accept cryptocurrencies in your Shopify store, you should definitely accept Bitcoin and Lightning payments. We cannot recommend crypto payment providers that do not offer Bitcoin and Lightning payments and will not take a closer look at them here.
Other cryptocurrencies should be selected depending on the business model and target audience.

The following crypto payment service providers support the payment processing of Bitcoin and Lightning as well as some other cryptocurrencies and are presented in more detail here. The list is in alphabetical order and does not represent a ranking.
Accept Bitcoin in the Shopify Shop with Bitpay
BitPay is a payment processing company that enables merchants to accept Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as a payment method. BitPay was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
The company offers an easy way for merchants to accept cryptocurrencies as a payment method without having to handle the volatility of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies themselves. BitPay converts the cryptocurrency into fiat currency (e.g., US dollars or euros) in real time and transfers the amount directly to the merchant’s bank account.
BitPay is one of the most well-known and widely used Bitcoin payment processing platforms and is used by thousands of merchants worldwide.
BitPay supports Bitcoin and Lightning payment processing, as well as Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Ripple (XRP), and Dodge.
We do not recommend Bitpay because end customers have to undergo a legitimation check when paying with Bitpay. You cannot expect this effort from your customer if he wants to pay with Bitcoin. This leads to significant purchase cancellations and should therefore not be used.
Accept Bitcoin in the Shopify Shop with BTCPay Server
BTCPay Server is a free and open-source payment processing software that allows merchants to accept Bitcoin and Lightning as a payment method without the need for a third-party payment processor.
To integrate BTCPay Server into your Shopify store, you can run your own BTCPay Server or use the BTCPay Server from Coincharge.
Instructions can be found in the article: https://coincharge.io/btcpay-shopify-bitcoin-bei-shopify-akzeptieren/
When using a BTCPay server, incoming Bitcoin payments are credited directly to your own Bitcoin wallet. An automated exchange into a fiat currency (e.g. US dollar or euro) does not take place. Using a BTCPay server is recommended if you want to keep bitcoin.
Accept Bitcoin in the Shopify Shop with Coinsnap
As a Lightning payment provider, Coinsnap specializes in payment processing for Bitcoin and Lightning payments.
As a merchant, you only need a Lightning wallet with a Lightning address to receive Bitcoin and Lightning payments from your customers.
By processing Bitcoin and Lightning payments through Coinsnap, merchants do not need to maintain and operate their own technical infrastructure.
Coinsnap does not hold customer funds at any time. All payments are routed directly to the merchants’ Lightning Wallets, just like a Lightning Routing Node.
For merchants who prefer a payout to a bank account, incoming Lightning payments are forwarded to a Lightning broker, who makes the exchange from Lightning to Euro and then pays out to the merchant’s bank account.
With the Shopify Payment Plugin, merchants can quickly and easily integrate Bitcoin and Lightning payments into Shopify. Here you can find detailed instructions on how to integrate Coinsnap into your Shopify store yourself.
With the discount code Coincharge you save 0.25% of the fees.

Accept Bitcoin in the Shopify Shop with Cointopay
Cointopay is a Czech payment processor that has been on the market since 2014. More than 30,000 merchants use Cointopay’s crypto payment processing. More than 80 different cryptocurrencies are supported, including Bitcoin, Lightning, Monero, Tether and Ethereum.
A variety of payment modules are also offered, including Shopify, to enable simple integration into your own store system. Incoming crypto sales can be paid out to the Cointopay wallet, to the merchant’s bank account, Paypal and Payeer.
The fees are 1.0102% and a KYC check is required.
Accept Bitcoin in the Shopify Shop with Coinpayments
CoinPayments is a cryptocurrency payment processing company that allows merchants to accept cryptocurrencies as a payment method. It was founded in 2013 and is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada.
CoinPayments offers a variety of features and tools for merchants, including the ability to accept Bitcoin and more than 1,800 other cryptocurrencies. The platform also supports stablecoins that are tied to the value of the US dollar.
For those who consider it beneficial to offer as many cryptocurrencies as possible to their customers, Coinpayments is the right solution. With over 1800 different coins, Coinpayments offers a comprehensive selection of coins that can be used as cryptocurrency.
With Coinpayments, the payout is made exclusively to your own crypto wallet. A payout in Euro to the own bank account is not offered.
Accept Bitcoin in the Shopify Shop with Opennode
OpenNode is a payment processing company that enables merchants to accept Bitcoin and Lightning as a payment method. OpenNode is a bitcoin-only payment processor and does not support other cryptocurrencies. OpenNode was founded in 2018 and is headquartered in San Francisco, California, USA.
Although Opennode offers payout to a bank account, this payout function for European traders was discontinued in mid-2023.
For a long time, OpenNode was recommended by Coincharge if you only wanted to accept Bitcoin and Lightning payments, but did not want to keep the Bitcoins yourself, but wanted to have them paid out to your bank account in euros. Unfortunately, this function is no longer offered for European merchants. However, if you would like a payout in Bitcoin, you are in good hands with Opennode.
